Detention tanks are now widely accepted as a cost effective technique for upgrading sewer system performance in respect to both flood protection and pollution abatement. This Manual brings together the results of research carried out by WRc over a ten year period into a single source document for designers.

There are three principal reasons for providing additional storage in a sewer system:
  • To alleviate flooding.
  • To reduce the pollution load passing to receiving streams.
  • To improve the hydraulic regime where renovation of structurally defective sewers will reduce the capacity of a system.

A combination of sewer rehabilitation and the provision of storage can provide a very cost effective solution to sewer system deficiencies.

This design guide builds on the previous guide for detention tank design by incorporating understanding of tank processes gained through research, and advancements in computer modelling techniques. As a result this report serves as the definitive guide on the design process for providing storage in the form of sewerage detention tanks. The guide includes information on tank location, tank sizing, tank shape and arrangement, cleaning techniques, and flow control devices.

The design methods for detention tanks have been updated to include the latest procedures for rainfall data generation and sewer system analysis. Similarly, design recommendations related to control of sediment and flow control devices have been reviewed and updated.
  • Tank location and configuration
  • Tank sizing
  • General arrangement considerations
  • Control of sediments
  • Flow control devices
