The Drain Repair Book since its launch in 2003 has become the recognised standard for domestic drain investigation and repair in the UK and is now in its 3rd Edition. The book was developed by the Insurance Drainage Forum, a group of the largest UK insurance companies and other key industry stakeholders, as the best practice guide for Drain Repair. Collectively they recognise that there is scope to improve the quality of repairs in the small diameter drainage industry, and also the effectiveness of all those who work within that industry by identifying and promoting best practice. It serves both as a guide to drainage specialists carrying out inspection and repair work, and to assist the key stakeholders and others in auditing the work.

The newly published 3rd edition both updates and adds content to the previous edition (published in 2005), in keeping with the Drainage Forum's desire for it to be a 'living document'. Changes have been made in response to the significant change in legislation covering drains and sewers in the Transfer of Private Sewers and Lateral Drains in October 2011. Further changes have also been made to reflect users' comments and particularly the feedback WRc get from attendees on the associated 'Essentials for Managing Drain Repair' training course. These changes include additional illustrations of drain ownership and responsibility, pipe condition and serviceability, extension of the techniques to include patch repairs, clarification of lining specification requirements, the legal aspects of drain repair and the inspection of treatment facilities including septic tanks and for the first time, small package treatment plant.

The Drain Repair Book covers the repair of 75mm to 250mm diameter drains and is split into four sections, offering guidance on the inspection and condition assessment of drains, a materials selection for cured-in-place repair systems, treatment including septic tanks and a new section on small package treatment plant.
