Cement mortar lining is a well-established technique used in the renovation of water mains. Pipes lined in this way are protected from internal corrosion and tuberculation, and the hydraulic capacity is improved. This document provides operational guidelines and a Code of Practice for engineers and contractord involved in the planning and implementation of renovation programmes using this technique.

The report covers the four principal areas of preparatory work: contract documentation; material selection and approval; and a good working practice for the process.
The Code of Practice provides the basis for contractors to prepare quality procedures for registration under ISO 9000. Since the document was drafted some technical terms have changed, documents have been revised and the regulations regarding the approval mechanism have been modified. Guidance in all of these areas is provided in an insert, published in 1994.

The insert also gives updated guidance on water quality, lining durability and effluent disposal. A sister document 'Example of Contract Documents for Cement Mortar Lining of Water Mains' provides examples ofcontracts which have been used in the water industry.
