It has been estimated that on average there are 22 bursts each year for every 100km of water pipeline in the UK. This represents an annual cost to the industry of several tens of millions of pounds. Whilst new pipelining materials are being introduced that should offer improved reliability in the future, the great majority of existing pipelines are prone to bursting due to age, ground movement, corrosion and damage.

This Manual is aimed at facilitating the process of mains repair. By identifying failure types and the appropriate repair system, efficiency and reliability will be optimised and cost effectiveness increased. The comprehensive nature of the document enables it to be used for both reference and training purposes.
