This report was prepared by the European Community/European Water Pollution Control Association (EC/EWPA) Emergent Hydrophyte Treatment Systems Expert Contact Group. It was updated in September 1990 to take account of experience gained from the operation of 500 or so Reed Bed Treatment Systems constructed in Western Europe since 1984. Whilst insufficient evidence was available to enable recommendations to be made on design of the best systems, this report does give recommendations intended to prevent the construction of those systems giving the poorest results.
